Despite many believing that finance jobs have been affected by the bad economy, latest surveys seems to indicate that things are still fine! Check out the latest market trends and salaries for Investment Banking, Investment Management, M&A, Audit, Compliance, Risk and Operations. This also includes another survey on Banking and Finance salaries in Honk Kong, Japan, Singapore and China.

what about private equity? any knowledge in this area?

PE is a bit murky, so there is not standard survey that I've seen. Its murky because there are more components to the overall package:

Salaries: Base salaries will typically follow what you have at banks, expect for the megafunds, which are much higher.

Bonuses: Will be less than banking, and will be around 100% typically

Carry: Carry varies a lot, and either comes at VP or Director level depending on the firm.

Others: I've heard of funds with co-investments opportunities, where you can put your own money on deals, but really depends on the firm

Here is the latest I got from headhunters:

Analyst: 50,000 to 75,000 + Bonus
Investment Manager / Associate: 60,000 to 95,000 + Bonus + possible carry
Principal/VP: 85,000 to 150,000 + bonus + carry
Partner/Investment Director: 135,000 and above + Bonus + carry
